Abstract
Introduction: In recent years there have been cases of leishmaniasis in urban areas of Colombia. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in two neighborhoods of Ovejas, Sucre, during August and September 2017. Previous informed consent, a rapid test onsite CTKBiotech © was applied to minors, this test assesses the presence of IgG and IgM antibodies against parasites of the Leishmania donovani complex. Blood samples from canines were taken for the rapid test and IFI, as well as a lymph node sample for parasite culture. Potential associated factors were evaluated with Chi-square and Fisher's test. Results: A seroprevalence of 14.54% (8/55) was obtained in the child population and statistical significance was found for children aged 60 months or less (X2 = 6.637 and P = 0.0100). The frequency of seropositives canines was 41.17% with IFI (7/17) and 5.88% with rapid test (1/17). In addition, a canine isolate was obtained, identified by PCR-sequencing as L. infantum. No association was found between the analyzed environmental factors and the seropositivity of canines. Conclusion: The presence of an active autochthonous focus of LV in urban area of the municipality of Ovejas is verified, with asymptomatic dogs as potential reservoirs. Children with age ≤ 5 years have contact with the parasite.
