Abstract
Background: Diabetes Mellitus is characterized by hyperglycemia. In 2014, 422 million people (8.5%) lived with diabetes worldwide. In Mexico, in 2018 there were approximately 8.6 million people with diabetes (10.3%) and 70% of the adult population were overweight or obese. Therefore, low-cost tools are required to expand medical care for the population at risk. The FINDRISC test is an instrument used worldwide to assess the risk of type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between the FINDRISC score and the value of glycated hemoglobin in health sciences teachers at the Universidad Veracruzana. Methods: Observational and cross-sectional study. The FINDRISC questionnaire was applied to 92 teachers from Faculties of Health Sciences, in which glycated hemoglobin was also determined. Results: It was determined that 26.1% teachers had high risk to develop type 2 diabetes and 7.6% had very high risk. There were identified 10% of teachers with prediabetes and 7.1% were identified as undiagnosed diabetes. Only 24 teachers (26.1%) had normal weight, 40 had overweight (43.5%) and 28 were obese (30.4%). Pearson's correlation of the FINDRISC test with glycated hemoglobin was r = 0.50 (95% I.C. 0.35-0.64). Conclusion: The FINDRISC test together with glycated hemoglobin are useful to identify groups at risk for developing diabetes in the Veracruz population.
